PLAUSIBLE MANNER
solo exhibition by JAAKKO PALLASVUO

In the past years my interest in art has shifted from stable objects and images to the socioeconomic networks that enable their production and display. This is connected to a more general interest in how communities and institutions take shape: structured hierarchies placed over unstructured ones. My current video work has been influenced by essay films (‘Sans Soleil’ by Chris Marker, ‘The Gleaners & I’ by Agnes Varda). I’m interested in the voiceover as a tool for articulating subjectivity. The director always there, often unreliable. I have used this narrative tool to investigate the overlap between virtual and physical presence. The performed self in “social media”. Last year I had two solo shows under the title New Sincerity. The works were attempts at embarrassing oneself in order to achieve a desired state of emotional honesty. The art was trying to be un-calculated and urgent, failed, and became an elaborate web of fictions instead. For this show I’m not exactly moving on. I’m still preoccupied with questions regarding sincerity and related questions regarding irony and cynicism. It’s about what’s true and about what could be - the plausible.
